Some classics are more than machines — they are living stories. This 1951 Lambretta Innocenti 125D Mk1, affectionately known as “Sofia”, carries a tale that began in Italy, crossed oceans, and lived a full South African life before being restored to perfection.
In 1958, Terry Avantanio and his wife arrived in Durban from Italy with their worldly goods packed into two suitcases — and this Lambretta 125D. For years, it was a faithful companion, later tucked away and nearly forgotten, until a new custodian brought it back into the light. Named “Sofia” along the way, it became a reminder of journeys made and lives lived.
Today, Sofia stands in perfectly restored condition. Every detail has been carefully brought back, from the bodywork to the mechanicals. She runs as sweetly as the day she left Innocenti’s factory in Milan, with a fresh spirit ready for either display or use.
• Condition: Excellent, as-new restoration
• Mechanical: Runs perfectly — kick, start, ride
• Originality: Rare Mk1 model, almost never seen in this condition
• History: Comes with a remarkable story of migration, memories, and passion
The Lambretta 125D Mk1 is already rare — but finding one with a full history, beautifully restored, and still carrying its personality makes this scooter something truly special.
For collectors of classic scooters or anyone who appreciates history on wheels, “Sofia” offers a chance to own not just a scooter, but a piece of post-war motoring heritage.
